QBs solid for Georgia
by David Paschall
Quarterbacks Aaron Murray, Hutson Mason and Christian LeMay posted solid numbers Saturday morning as the Georgia Bulldogs went through their second spring scrimmage.
Murray completed 11 of 16 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, while Mason went 12-of-19 for 192 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions according to statistics provided by coach Mark Richt. LeMay was 2-for-2 for 67 yards, with 66 coming on a touchdown to Michael Bennett.
Carlton Thomas led the tailbacks with 26 yards on eight carries, with Caleb King adding 16 on seven.
“The running game didn’t do much,” Richt said. “The guys protected pretty well, and we threw and caught the ball well.”
Bennett had three catches for 94 yards and the touchdown, while Tavarres King added three for 77 and had a 45-yard score from Mason.
Safety Shawn Williams had seven tackles and an interception to pace a defense that Richt said struggled on the perimeter. Inside linebackers Richard Samuel and Brandon Burrows combined for 13 stops, with Burrows also tallying two sacks.
Four defensive players — backs Brandon Boykin, Sanders Commings and Jakar Hamilton and inside linebacker Christian Robinson — sat out with concussions.
“When you hit, you get them,” Richt said. “My goal this spring was to make sure we were a physical football team. There is nothing out there that will cost anybody the season, so we’re thankful about that.”
Eighteen players sat out altogether.
Georgia will practice three more times before wrapping up spring with next Saturday’s G-Day game, which will start at 1 p.m. and will be televised by CSS. The game will have a different format this year, as the teams will be drafted following Monday night’s practice.
Richt said each team will have an offensive and defensive representative Monday, and those players will take turns picking a position until it is gone.
“I’ve wanted to do this for years, but I always let the assistant coaches talk me out of it,” he said. “This year I’m not going to let them.”
Odds and ends
Junior tailback Washaun Ealey (hamstring) has missed both spring scrimmages, but Richt believes he will be able to play at G-Day. … Richt said LeMay, an early enrollee, has not been able to unseat Mason as the No. 2 quarterback.
